Cavity Dragons Jr Game Play Questions

What are the different screens? How do I navigate through them?

There are four main screens, the fire-dragon page (tap food and fire to make them disappear!), toothbrushing practice (brush your teeth and gums to a sparkle), a jigsaw puzzle page and a letter puzzle page. You navigate between these pages with the forward and reverse arrows. You can enter the fire station mini game (decorate your own fire station) by touching the fire hat.  You can enter the rewards page with stickers by touching the little green fireman.

On the fire-dragon screen, why do the cavity dragons disappear and then reappear?

The game is designed so that you have to get rid of the bits of food in order for the cavity dragon to disappear to reinforce how important it is to clean all the food from your teeth. After five pieces of food are cleared, the first dragon will disappear; after 10 pieces, the second dragon will disappear; after all 15 pieces of food are cleared, the last dragon will disappear.

On the fire-dragon page, why are little stickers appearing and crossing the screen?

With each piece of food and fire that your child clears, they earn a sticker. If you hit the little fireman in the bottom right corner, you will enter the sticker page. There, your child can rearrange the stickers and then save them to your camera roll by hitting the camera icon.

On the fire-dragon page, how do I clear a piece of food?

Just tap it to make the fireman appear. He will squirt toothpaste to make the food go away.

On the tooth brushing page, why aren’t the teeth getting clean?

Make sure you brush each tooth and the gums.

In the mini game, how do I change the colors? Other features?

Tap on the icons across the bottom of the page to change the colors of these items. Tap the fire pole or the garage door for a fun surprise!

How do I work the jigsaw puzzle page?

Drag a piece of the tooth over the tooth it came from, close to its spot, and it will snap into place. Tap the other teeth for a fun surprise.

How do I work the letter puzzle?

Drag each letter over the “Cavity Dragons” template.  Because there are two “a’s, we made an “ra” for the “a” in dragon; the other “a” goes to cavity.

How do I make the fireman’s hand go away?

This is a high five to congratulate your child.  He can press his hand against the fireman’s hand to make it disappear.

What are the different screens? How do I navigate through them?

There are three main screens, the fire-dragon page (tap food and fire quickly before you get cavities!), toothbrushing practice (brush your teeth and gums to a sparkle) and a card game. You navigate between these pages with the forward and reverse arrows. You can enter the fire station to collect your flossers by touching the mini fire station on the toothbrushing page when it begins to flash.  You can enter the rewards page with gold coins by tapping the green coin.

On the fire-dragon page, how do I clear a piece of food?

Just tap it to make the fireman appear. He will squirt toothpaste to make the food go away.

On the fire-dragon screen, why do the food bits keep coming back?

There are five rounds for each piece of food.

On the fire-dragon screen, why did I get a cavity?  How do I make it go away?

If you don’t move quickly enough, food bits will turn into cavities; candy the quickest and broccoli the slowest.  You must tap a cavity twice to eliminate it.

On the fire-dragon screen, why did my teeth turn grey and fall out?

If cavities aren’t cleared quickly enough, teeth turn grey.  Too many grey teeth, and your teeth fall out, and you lose this round.

On the fire-dragon screen, why do the cavity dragons disappear and then reappear?

The game is designed so that you have to get rid of the bits of food in order for the cavity dragon to disappear to reinforce how important it is to clean all the food from your teeth. You must clear all the popcorn for the yellow dragon to disappear, all the candy for the purple dragon to disappear, and all the broccoli for the green dragon to disappear.

On the fire-dragon page, why are little coins appearing and crossing the screen?

With each piece of food and fire that your child clears, they earn coins. If you hit the little green coin in the top left corner, you will enter the sticker page. There, your child can rearrange the stickers and then save them to your camera roll by hitting the camera icon.

On the tooth brushing page, why aren’t the teeth getting clean?

Make sure you brush each tooth and the gums.

On the tooth brushing page, why is the mini fire station blinking?

You’ve earned fireman flossers.  Tap the mini station to retreive them.

In the fire station, how do I return with the flossers?

Tap on the door opener to move the flossers, then tap the green tooth to return to the toothbrushing page.

How do I play the card game?

The game is a variation on slap jack.  Hit the dragon card to earn a point for all the cards beneath it.  Tap any other card, and your pile goes away.

Parenting Questions

What are creative ways parents can use the Cavity Dragons app to encourage children to brush their teeth?
Make toothbrushing time fun by encouraging children to brush away the cavity dragons. Pretend together that your child is the fireman using the toothbrush to carefully get rid of all the cavity dragons. Make a game of getting rid of all of the cavity dragons. If your child doesn’t spend enough time brushing his or her teeth, try setting the timer on your iPhone or iPad for 2 minutes of brushing time and say the fireman says to brush your teeth till the “ping” goes off so that you make sure all the cavity dragons are gone! Vicky often tells her son that she can see a cavity dragon shooting fire out from his mouth, and this actually does work. (Of course keep your device away from the water!)

My child is on the autism spectrum, and it is very difficult to get him or her to brush his/her teeth. Could the Cavity Dragons game help?
From Lisa’s perspective as a parent of a child on the spectrum, this game can be very useful for children on the spectrum who often love playing video games and learn well through visual and gaming media. You could then use a social story or script about getting rid of the cavity dragons when you talk to your child about brushing their teeth. You could even use some visuals of the cavity dragon and fireman characters in your script.
